I studied Fine Arts at the Northern Beaches Institute from 2006-2009. Part of the course involved welding for artists.
At first I was apprehensive of the heat and the flames but I came to love welding and the scope it offered.
I approach sculpting with steel in much the same way that I approach painting: the steel becomes the canvas and the welder, ( like a brush) creates molten stokes.
I love cutting, curving and shaping a hard metal and giving it an organic look. My early works were of oversized leaves in mild steel but the veins were welded in stainless steel. They were meant to be displayed outdoors. Exposure to weather meant that the steel works will rust and gain a reddish patina and over the years the framework of veins will hold the leaf together and give it a skeletal appearance.
These leaves are works in progress as they will rust and fray over time.
My later works are of stainless steel and can be displayed both indoors and outdoors.
I chose stainless steel to represent the beauty of a very ephemeral and transient organic object.
